This week started with a much-needed task—cleaning the chandelier in our entryway. With its vaulted ceiling, this was no small feat, but I was determined to get it done. As I was up on the ladder, I realized one of the bulbs needed replacing. Of course, it had to be a 60-watt soft white, which I didn’t have handy. So, I did what any resourceful person would do: I borrowed one from a lamp in my office.

Later in the week, I noticed one of our Alexa-powered multi-color smart bulbs had mysteriously stopped responding. When I went to investigate, I discovered—to my surprise—that I had taken that bulb from my office and put it somewhere else. I was pretty sure where it went. I asked, “Alexa, please change the first light bulb to blue.” And just like that, our chandelier, which should have been uniformly lit with soft white bulbs, now had one bright blue light among them.

A Fortunate Turn of Events

My wife couldn’t help but laugh at my little mix-up. But then, she came up with a brilliant idea: “What if we put all smart bulbs in the chandelier? We could change them to red and green for Christmas, or match them to Kenny and Vanna’s wedding colors when we host the pre-wedding dinner!”

What started as a small mistake ended up sparking a creative new idea that we’re both excited about.

Conclusion

Sometimes, what seems like a mistake can turn out to be a fortunate accident. If I hadn’t mixed up the bulbs, we wouldn’t have thought of the fun possibilities that smart bulbs could bring to our chandelier. It’s a reminder that even when things don’t go as planned, there’s often an opportunity to move forward in a new and unexpected direction. So, don’t be afraid to take a chance—your next big idea might be just one happy accident away.
